A lot of people write about a lot of topics which are as boring as watching paint dry, and receive millions of visitors and pageviews daily. Does this make them the best webmasters on the planet? Of course it doesn’t. People can write nonsense about boring topics and consistently exploit Google and other search engines and traffic to become ‘popular’ in terms of web metrics. However, web metrics are not what counts when it comes to the ‘best blogger in the world’ award – what counts is what we classify as the golden standard of information and intellectual currency. Think of this post as your education in writing a blog, like doing online degrees or going to a university to study it. Follow the tips and you will be a great blogger in no time.

So this is certain – the subject matter of the blog must be something pertaining to the normal lives or social lives of everyday people. When defining everyday people, it’s important not to become snobby or judgemental. We’re not talking about income or lifestyle, but something which people would objectively call ‘normal’. There’s nothing worse than having to read through pages of jargon in order to try to find the information that you’re looking for. A blogger should keep it real, factual and simple. When we talk about influence, we don’t talk about making people do things. People with influence don’t need to instruct people to take action – in general they’ll do it without being told to because they want to make a difference and act on what they’ve been told about.

In the blog world, influence says a lot for a writer. It lets us know about what sort of content they’re producing, and also what the demographics of their users are. Some people can have a huge number of blog readers, but if they asked them all for $1, they might have a problem with the response rate. They might be able to writer five posts per day about hundreds of different topics, but what is the point of nobody reads their posts or finds them interesting or useful? There is no point.

How does influence relate to the best blogger in the world?

But how can we measure influence? It’s very difficult if we’re not able to run some sort of objective test across a number of different subjects and metrics. I’d like to be able to tell you a formula or equation which we can plug statistics into, but I won’t for two reasons. The first is that if (and I’m not confirming or denying that such an equation exists) there were such a formula readily available, then we would keep it under lock and key to safeguard the importance of our awards ceremony. If someone could clone our tracking and information then they could clone the best blogger in the world competition, and that would be a disaster for us.
